Private Pay: Why Some Clients Choose to Pay Out of Pocket

Many clients choose to pay privately because it offers greater flexibility, privacy, and control over their mental health care. While insurance can be a valuable resource, private-pay services allow therapy and psychological assessment to be guided by your clinical needs rather than insurance requirements.

Freedom to Choose the Right Therapist

Finding the right therapeutic fit is one of the strongest predictors of successful treatment. Paying out of pocket allows you to choose a provider based on expertise, experience, and personal connection rather than insurance network restrictions. This is especially important when seeking specialized treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), EMDR, or comprehensive psychological evaluations.

Greater Flexibility in Treatment

Insurance companies often determine the frequency, duration, and medical necessity of treatment. With private-pay services, your treatment plan is based solely on your individual goals and clinical needs. Together, we determine the length and frequency of sessions without limitations imposed by an insurance company.

Increased Privacy

Insurance companies require therapists to submit a mental health diagnosis and clinical information in order to authorize payment. This information becomes part of your insurance record and may be shared for claims processing and utilization review.

When you choose private pay, your information remains confidential within the limits of the law. A diagnosis is not required solely for insurance reimbursement, providing an additional level of privacy for those who prefer to keep their mental health care separate from their insurance record.

Timely Access to Care

Private-pay clients are often able to schedule appointments sooner, avoiding delays that can occur when searching for an in-network provider with availability.

Personalized Care

Without insurance restrictions, treatment can remain focused on your individual needs rather than administrative requirements. This allows for a more personalized, collaborative, and flexible therapeutic experience.

Fees

Initial Intake Appointment: $300

Individual Therapy (50-minute follow-up session): $245

Psychological Testing

Insurance is not accepted for psychological evaluations.

The cost of a comprehensive psychological evaluation varies depending on the referral question, complexity of the evaluation, and testing required. Please contact the office to discuss your specific needs and receive an individualized cost estimate.

In-Network Insurance Plans

Dr. Duschane is currently in-network with:

  • First Choice Health

  • PacificSource

For all other insurance plans, services are considered out-of-network.

If you have out-of-network benefits, a detailed Superbill can be provided for you to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Because out-of-network benefits vary by plan, it is recommended that you contact your insurance provider before your first appointment to determine your reimbursement eligibility and any out-of-pocket costs.

If you have questions about fees, insurance, or reimbursement, please don't hesitate to contact the office. We are happy to help you understand your options.
